Internship programs are the work oriented learning experiences that help and provide opportunity for new graduates, students and career seekers to gain hands on knowledge, skills and experience in their related career fields. An internship program that is related to the degree or course you are pursuing will definitely enhance your skills and confidence. The learning experience you get is really useful in the long run. Some degree programs require students to complete an internship and are given credit for the same.

You must always take time and search for a suitable internship depending on your qualification. You can work for a bank, IT company, newspaper, publishing house, government organization, retail company, or any other related company.

Some organizations have a deadline for receiving internship applications, so make sure you update yourself with these important details. It is therefore suggested to begin your search months in advance. Doing an internship after the first year in college is a good idea as it gives you exposure to new career fields. This also gives you a chance to learn and enhance skills on the job.

To search for a suitable internship, students can seek advice from their seniors in college, teachers, and career counselors. Also discuss with friends and family members as they might also suggest you something worth considering. You can also check advertisements in newspapers and the internet. Another way is to check the career section of company websites of organizations who are open to hiring interns.

You can join a paid or no pay internship program as each organization has different terms and conditions. You can also join a non-profit organization for internship. One must not hesitate to join a no pay internship program if it is with a reputable organization matching your educational stream. The experience you will get there will surely fetch you a great job in future. Always look at long term goals before joining an internship.

Internships involve training students under the supervision of an experienced professional. The objective is to provide on the job training and relevant work experience related to the degree course a student is pursuing. One must not confuse an internship with a summer job as a summer job is a part-time job done with the aim to earn money.

Another thing that you must know is what a credit internship program is. Under this, the intern is supposed to complete a certain number of hours. It is advised to check the terms and conditions before joining any such internship. Internships for credit are mostly graded but it is not important to mention on the resume that the internship was done for credit.

You can mention on your resume your internship experience including work activities. Employers look for skills and qualification matching the job. An internship is the best way to sharpen your skills and get experience on the job.

College credit given for internships to students does not mean that it will be an unpaid internship. Giving credits for an internship has no relation with getting paid for an internship. Colleges however, encourage employers to pay students for an internship.
