An applicant is considered a junior provided he has, when internship begins, completed all sophomore credits (i.e. 60 or more than 60 hours or 90 quarter hours).

In an unpaid internship, the student may be able to earn college credit, besides an unpaid assigned to the US qualifies for metro-check transit subsidy. Compensation and benefits in paid internship includes paid federal holidays, contribution to social security. He or she gets a temporary appointment at different levels depending upon education, work experience, and availability of funds. In case of appointment for more than 90 days, he or she also earns annual leave and sick leave at the rate of four hours per biweekly pay period. A paid intern assigned to the US qualifies for metro-check transit subsidy. The unpaid interns are not considered Federal government employees and are entitled to any employee benefits. They are, however, protected under Federal Torts Claims Act in the event of job-related injuries.

Undoubtedly, a starting salary has great meaning for a fresh graduate but the criteria should not be salary only. A student should search that internship program where he or she could apply knowledge acquired in the university. There is no harm in waiting for some time if you are from a highly specialized field rather than accepting just any profile that you come across which does not match your knowledge, skills, and qualification.
