Description
CARE is seeking a Government Relations Intern who will provide policy assistance for Government Relations senior director and senior policy advocates who lobby on foreign policy related to the federal budget, sexual and reproductive health and rights, humanitarian crises, gender empowerment and food and nutrition security. Work will involve attending briefings and meetings and drafting notes/memos for the team; drafting letters and emails; making travel arrangements; preparing materials for meetings, scheduling meetings and other events, other administrative tasks; attending meetings with lobbyists or other CARE experts with U.S. government officials in federal agencies implementing foreign affairs; attending meetings on Capitol Hill with lobbying advocates; participating in meetings and communications with non-profit organizations. Special projects may include assistance with Capitol Hill briefings, logistical support for lobby days and high level staff visits, other admin support as necessary.
Learning Objectives:
Through his or her daily work and exposure to the GR team experts and our work, the intern should be studying the real-world challenges in the areas of foreign assistance funding, food security, sexual reproductive maternal health, humanitarian crises and gender empowerment around the world. He/she should also learn about the workings of our Congress, the federal budget process and how U.S. foreign assistance impacts what happens to people around the world.
Responsibilities:
The intern will help the team with its fast-paced work that shifts frequently based on current events. Deliverables will mostly be short term project assistance or research and writing.
Qualifications:
Proficient in English (Verbal & Written)
Proficient in MS Skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)
College or graduate school preferred.
Standard workplace IT, digital, and technology skills; Office 365 is helpful. Critical thinking, writing and analysis. Familiarity and experience with international development, humanitarian politics and needs, gender issues, federal government, international affairs and/ or community service preferred along with strong desire to build understanding of the U.S. role in impacting global poverty and women's lives around the world.
