Job Description

The Student Internship Program is designed to nurture the educational and professional development of promising job candidates, which may lead to longer retention of the individual as a County employee.
Student Interns will assist professional and technical employees in the performance of their duties under close supervision. Specific tasks will vary with the Agency/Department to which they are assigned for a particular work period. For the Agency as a whole, it is expected that the level of education and capabilities attained by Student Interns will be fully capitalized.
There are four levels of Student Intern. 
Student Intern - Level I: 
High school students enrolled in regular high school classes
Those enrolled in an alternative vocational high school
Students working toward high school equivalency
 Student Intern - Level II:
Freshman or Sophomore year college students
Community college students
Vocational school students who have completed high school
Student Intern - Level III: Junior or Senior year college students
Student Interns at this level must work in their chosen field of study
Student Intern - Level IV:
 Professional and graduate school students
Student Interns at this level must work in their chosen field of study
This posting is for the Student Intern, Level II and Student Intern, Level II - 521. Student Interns who are hired to perform tasks or duties similar to classifications represented by Local 521 are categorized as Student Intern - 521. This list will be used to fill Student Intern, Level II - 521 opportunities. It may also be used for other Student Intern, Level II internships.
Applicants for this posting should be
freshman or sophomore year college students, community college students, or vocational school students who have completed high school and have an overall grade point average of at least 2.5 on a four-point scale.
Interns in the level are closely supervised and work as assistants. They are responsible for learning the Agency's or Department's policies, procedures and methods of operation; collecting and tabulating data; and learning how to interpret such. In addition, Level II Student Interns are able to evaluate information gained in accordance with established policies and procedures and assist professional staff members in ongoing project work.
This recruitment requires the submission of an online application. No paper applications will be accepted. You must also attach documentation of your student status. Normally, an unofficial transcript and a copy of your current schedule is sufficient documentation. You must submit all documents by uploading it as an attachment to your job application. Applications without the required documentation will be rejected.

A copy of your unofficial transcript, official transcript or a letter from your admissions office that displays your name, school information, declared major, grade point average and total units/hours accumulated. Please Note: For verification purposes, we reserve the right to request official documentation.
A current class schedule that includes your name, course dates (start/end date) and school information on it or a letter from the admissions office. This will fulfill proof of enrollment in high school, college or proof of graduation within the last six months, from the date of graduation.
Employment Standards
Student Eligibility:
In order to qualify for the Student Intern classifications, a student must:
  Be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident alien, or a non-citizen with proof of eligibility to work in the United States. Certain individuals under eighteen may require work permits.
Be enrolled in an accredited institution or a school licensed by a state agency and have attended that institution for at least one semester.
Have an overall institutional grade point average of at least 2.5 on a four-point scale.
Submit a completed application for employment.
Pass a physical exam.
Verification and Audit Procedures:
Prior to hiring a student or recent graduate into one of the proposed intern classifications, departments need to verify both the student's status with the school and enrollment in a defined program of study that is aligned with the intern position the student will fill. Departmental use of these classifications will be subject to audit from ESA Human Resources to ensure that they are being used for the defined purposes of introducing the County to students as a potential employer and providing practical work experience to local students. The recent graduate category will also be monitored to ensure that no one is working as an intern longer than six months following graduation.
Hours per fiscal year (July 1 - June 30) are limited to 1,040. Work can be performed full-time during the summer and/or part-time during the school year, with the proposed work pattern approved by the Agency.
