Strong interest in social work and/or indigent defense work. Currently enrolled in a four (4) year college or university working toward a degree in social work, criminal justice or other related field.
The Hamilton County Public Defender Juvenile Division has been awarded a two-year federal grant from the U.S. Department of Justice and the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. The grant will fund the Division’s “Holistic Defense Team Project”. To assist in implementing the project, the Office is seeking a Student Intern. This position is a one to two semester grant-funded internship.
Under the general supervision and direction from the Juvenile Director, Social Work Fellow, and Mitigation Specialist, the Student Intern will provide direct support to the Social Work Fellow and Mitigation Specialist. Specifically, the Student Intern assist with cases involving juvenile delinquency, where indigent youth are facing serious charges, potential placement outside of their home or transfer to adult court. The Student Intern will also assist the Social Work Fellow and Mitigation Specialist with data collection, the development of materials, and with various community outreach activities.
Takes direction and carries out tasks with minimal oversight.
Maintains confidentiality of information relative to clients and other associates.
Assists the Social Work Fellow and Mitigation Specialist in investigating and proposing positive alternatives to incarceration, removal of child from the home or other potential penalties faced by the client.
Visits clients in the Juvenile Detention Center when necessary and under the supervision of the Social Work Fellow.
Assists the Social Work Fellow and Mitigation Specialist in designing, implementing, and developing materials for a community training in participatory defense and other community outreach activities.
Attends court hearings and other meetings for clients when necessary and under the supervision of the Social Work Fellow.
Assists the Social Work Fellow and Mitigation Specialist in developing a working knowledge of social agencies and community service providers and creating an open line of communication with such agencies.
Performs other similar and related duties as may be designated by the Juvenile Director, Social Work Fellow or Mitigation Specialist.
