Description of Work
The Young Innovators Program is an eight-week paid summer internship offered through the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and the Eshelman Institute for Innovation. The program offers high school students the opportunity to participate in an immersive experience designed to engage students in cutting edge and innovative research in STEM as it relates to the pharmaceutical sciences.
Throughout the program, interns work directly with a faculty preceptor, laboratory mentor, and clinical mentor to gain hands-on research experience and pursue a mentored research project. Interns spend approximately 32 hours per week in a research lab or center, and also participate in various team building, career development, and interdisciplinary activities outside the laboratory environment.
In addition to supporting the research of the faculty preceptor, including regular laboratory meetings, interns will participate in the following activities:
*Pursue a mentored research project that will be presented at the 2018 Young Innovators Program Research Symposium that takes place at the conclusion of the summer.
*Participate in a series of panel discussions designed to expose interns to career opportunities in the pharmaceutical sciences, pharmacy, and healthcare in general. Panels also provide interns the opportunity to interact with undergraduate researchers, graduate and professional students, and industry professionals.
*Tour various facilities across UNC and the surrounding biotech community. Past tours include UNC Cancer Hospital Infusion Pharmacy, Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies, Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, the BeAM Makerspaces at Murray Hall, and Kenan Science Library.
*Participate in several workshops designed to provide interns the opportunity to explore the profession of pharmacy, the Doctor of Pharmacy program, challenges and opportunities within the profession, and core concepts of problem-solving, failure, collaboration and communication.

Applicants must be currently enrolled in 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grade, and must be able to demonstrate a strong interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) as it relates to the practice of pharmacy and the advancement of pharmaceutical science research.
