In an effort to keep teens occupied and give them direction, Boston Cares provides work for 500 area teens.
The program is a $1 million-dollar partnership between the Boston Globe and John Hancock Financial, put together by Mayor Thomas Menino. The Boston Summer Scholars Program gives qualified teenagers on-the-job training in corporate or non-profit environments.
Boston Cares is the largest corporate sponsored summer job program in Boston this year.
In a job market where summer work is occupied by college students, immigrant workers, and part-timers, teens are left with little opportunity. As a result, cities like Boston have seen increases in teen violence and crime.
Work programs like Boston Cares give teenagers structure, responsibility, and incentives for the future. Studies have shown participation in summer work programs leads to lower high school dropout rates, increases in post-secondary education, and even fewer teenage pregnancies.
Companies like John Hancock and the Globe believe it’s a wise investment, since they are training the workforce of tomorrow.
