As most teens are headed back to school, many in Boston actually learned something on their summer break thanks to John Hancock Financial.
The Boston-based company staffed approximately 575 teens, making John Hancock the largest corporate provider of summer jobs for teens in the city.
The $3.3 million effort is part of the company’s initiative to employ Boston area teens to help prepare them for careers in the financial sector.
John Hancock funded 500 positions directly, and the remaining jobs were paid for by company employees who raised money by running the Boston Marathon -- which John Hancock sponsors.
Ninety-six employees collected $134,000. John Hancock provides race entry for those who raise $3,000 or more.
This year John Hancock nearly tripled the number of jobs provided for the summer, which was up from 200 last year.
