''Yes, it’s true that the overall hiring of students has slowed because of a weakened economy. However, it isn’t impossible to find a job. Students only have to work harder this year,” says Harrison Barnes, CEO and founder of InternshipCrossing.
According to a report by the Northeastern University Center for Labor Market Studies (CLMS), in June the teen employment rate stood at 37.1%, reflecting a decrease of 2.5% from last year. Student employment rates have been declining sharply since the fall of 2006. In fact, the CLMS report stated that the summer 2007 job market for teens was the worst in the post-World War II period, and the 2008 job market is poised to show even worse figures.
''There are various reasons for this plummeting student job market. During recession students are generally the first ones to get fired and the last ones to get hired. Additionally, the companies that usually hire teens are facing the economic crunch. Companies such as Starbucks are closing stores, which has lowered the supply of summer jobs,” explains Barnes.
